What to Look For on an Electrolyte Label (And What to Avoid)

The front of an electrolyte package is an advertisement. The back is the contract. Almost everything that matters is on the supplement facts panel, and once you know what to look for, you can size up any product in under a minute. Here is the checklist.

1. Check the added sugar first

Flip to the panel and find added sugar. Many popular hydration mixes use sugar as a primary ingredient, sometimes 10 or more grams per serving. A little can aid absorption during hard exercise, but for daily use it is largely there for taste and adds empty calories. If sugar is near the top of the ingredient list, the drink is doing its work with sweetness, not minerals. Look for low or zero added sugar for an everyday product.

2. Look at the magnesium, and its form

Magnesium is where products separate themselves, because it is expensive and easy to skimp on. Two things to check: the amount, and the form. A meaningful daily dose starts around 100 mg and climbs from there. The form should be named: glycinate, bisglycinate, or malate are well absorbed, citrate is decent, and oxide is the cheap, poorly absorbed one. A magnesium number with no form named usually means the cheap version.

3. Check sodium and potassium in context

Sodium and potassium are the core electrolytes for fluid balance. Sports formulas run high on sodium because they target heavy sweat loss; daily formulas run more moderate. Neither is wrong, but match it to your use. If you are not doing hard, sweaty exercise, you do not need a huge sodium load every day.

4. See whether trace minerals are present at all

Most mixes stop at sodium, potassium, and maybe magnesium. A more complete formula includes trace minerals like zinc, selenium, and others, often from a sea mineral source. This is a genuine point of difference, since the majority of the category ignores it.

5. Scan for the junk

Check the bottom of the ingredient list for artificial colors, artificial sweeteners if you avoid them, and a long tail of fillers. A clean label keeps this section short.
