ConcenTrace declares 3 mg of potassium against Current's 330 mg. It declares no calcium line at all. And it contains no vitamins of any kind — not one B vitamin, no vitamin C, no vitamin D. Current is built for the other job: minerals in the same glass as six bioactive B vitamins, 500 mg of vitamin C, vegan D3 and an antioxidant complex. Buy the one that matches your job, but read both panels before you decide which job you are doing.

These Are Not the Same Kind of Product

Most comparison articles pretend the two products in the headline are rivals. This one will not. ConcenTrace, made by Trace Minerals Research of West Haven, Utah, is a concentrate: you take 40 drops of it. Current is a 7 g powder stick you dissolve in a glass of water. One is a mineral additive, the other is a drink.

The design briefs differ too. ConcenTrace exists to add ionic magnesium and chloride, plus whatever seawater carries alongside them, to water or food. It is the standard answer in the water-filtration world to "my reverse-osmosis system strips everything, what do I put back?" Current exists to cover the daily micronutrient and electrolyte load in one glass — a broader brief, and a different shopping list. Seven minerals. That is the list. The source is Great Salt Lake water concentrated by solar evaporation with about 99% of the sodium removed, which is the company's own description of the process. The label permits one to two servings a day.

Two entries surprise people. The first is that there is no calcium line — not a low number, not a "less than 1%" entry; calcium simply is not declared. The second is lithium at 1.5 mg, unusual to see quantified on a consumer panel and not present in any declared amount in Current. Neither is good or bad here. The two per-serving prices in the last row are not measuring the same thing, which is why we have left them in the table rather than building a section around them. One serving buys minerals. The other buys minerals plus six B vitamins, vitamin C, vegan D3, an antioxidant complex, flavour and a single-serve format you do not have to measure. Assembling that second list from separate purchases — a magnesium product, a potassium-bearing electrolyte, a B-complex, vitamin C, vitamin D3, a polyphenol supplement — costs more than $2.33 a day in most configurations and means taking five things. Whether that consolidation is worth it depends on whether you would have bought the other five. The Potassium Gap and the Missing Calcium Line

Start with the number that moves furthest between the two panels. ConcenTrace declares 3 mg of potassium, under 1% of the Daily Value. Current declares 330 mg. The gap is 110-fold, and it is the single sharpest numeric contrast between the two labels.

It also stands on its own, because nowhere does Trace Minerals state that low potassium is a design objective, the way they state it for sodium. The Adequate Intake set by the National Academies is 3,400 mg a day for adult men and 2,600 mg for adult women, and NHANES data have consistently shown most US adults falling below it. Against that backdrop, 3 mg is a rounding error. If you are buying a mineral product because your diet is light on fruit and vegetables, the drops will not move that number.

The sodium line, for the record, is a different story and we are not going to pretend otherwise. ConcenTrace's 5 mg per serving is not a shortfall, it is the entire point of the manufacturing process: Trace Minerals removes roughly 99% of the sodium from Great Salt Lake water deliberately, and they say so on the bottle. Faulting a product for succeeding at its stated design goal is the kind of cheap shot that makes comparison content worthless.

Calcium is the other absence. There is no calcium line on the panel at all — not zero, not "less than 1%," the line does not exist. For a product marketed on the breadth of its mineral spectrum, the absence of a declaration for the most abundant mineral in the human body is a fair thing to notice. In fairness, Current does not declare calcium either, and that is not a point in our favour; neither product is a calcium supplement. Zero Vitamins Is a Decision, Not an Oversight

ConcenTrace contains no vitamins. No B vitamins, no vitamin C, no vitamin D. It is exclusively a mineral supplement, and that is the product working exactly as intended. Trace Minerals sells separate SKUs that pair ConcenTrace with vitamin D3 for buyers who want both; the plain drops have none, on purpose. So the honest framing is: if you want vitamins, this isn't that product. Not "ConcenTrace forgot the vitamins."

Where it becomes a real decision point is cofactor overlap. Magnesium and vitamin D interact in both directions: the enzymes that hydroxylate vitamin D to 25(OH)D in the liver and then to the active 1,25(OH)2D form in the kidney are magnesium-dependent, and the vitamin D binding protein requires magnesium too. Vitamin B6 participates in magnesium's movement into cells. That is mechanism, not promise, and it is why Current puts 25 mcg of D3 and 2 mg of P5P in the same stick as the magnesium. This is also where the two products stop being alternatives. If your routine already includes a multivitamin, a B-complex and a potassium source, the drops are an add-on to a stack you have already built. Magnesium: Why the Form Explains the Four-Week Ramp-Up

Magnesium is the one nutrient the two products genuinely share, and the interesting difference between them is not the dose. It is the chemistry.

ConcenTrace's magnesium arrives paired with chloride, which is exactly what you would expect from concentrated seawater: the lake water is magnesium chloride brine, and the panel's 650 mg of chloride sitting alongside the magnesium is that pairing showing up in the numbers. Current's 220 mg arrives from three forms instead: magnesium bisglycinate, magnesium malate, and ionic magnesium from ancient inland seawater — three forms chosen for tolerance rather than one salt asked to do all the work. On the printed panel ConcenTrace declares 250 mg of magnesium to Current's 220 mg, a 30 mg difference, and the rest of this section is about why that number on its own does not settle much.

Form matters because of what happens to the fraction that is not absorbed. Magnesium salts left in the intestinal lumen are osmotically active: they hold water in the gut rather than letting it cross into the body. That is the mechanism behind every saline laxative on the pharmacy shelf, and it is dose-dependent and salt-dependent. Poorly absorbed, highly soluble inorganic magnesium salts pull more water than chelated forms, in which the magnesium is bound to an amino acid and travels partly by peptide-associated routes. Bisglycinate is magnesium bound to two glycine molecules; malate pairs it with malic acid, an intermediate in the citric acid cycle.

Now look at what the ConcenTrace directions ask you to do. Week one, 10 drops a day. Week two, 20. Week three, 30. Week four onward, up to 40. That is a four-week titration to reach a single serving, written by the manufacturer, printed on the bottle. Nobody writes a month-long ramp for a product that sits easily at full dose on day one. The most parsimonious explanation is the osmotic one: the gastrointestinal tolerance threshold for a concentrated magnesium chloride brine is lower than the label serving, so tolerance is built gradually rather than having first-time buyers quit after one bad afternoon. It is a sensible instruction. It is also a clue about the form, and it is printed in the manufacturer's own words rather than inferred by us.

Current asks for no ramp-up at all. One stick, day one, full serving. That is the practical consequence of splitting 220 mg across bisglycinate, malate and ionic marine magnesium instead of loading it onto a single soluble salt. And it reframes the 30 mg on the panel: a dose you have to spend a month working up to is not straightforwardly equivalent to a dose you can take on the first morning. Comparing the two top-line numbers as though they were interchangeable ignores the schedule attached to one of them.

Two honest caveats. None of this predicts what happens to any individual — tolerance to magnesium salts varies enormously, and plenty of ConcenTrace users report no issue at 40 drops. And nothing here is a claim that Current's magnesium is better absorbed as a finished product; that has not been measured, and we are not going to imply it. The osmotic mechanism is well characterised; the personal outcome is not. The Trace Mineral Number Nobody Prints on the Label

ConcenTrace is sold on the breadth of its mineral spectrum, so the count matters. The company is inconsistent about it. Their blog says "over 72 ionic trace minerals and elements." The current product page says "70+." The printed Supplement Facts panel carries no number at all. Seven minerals are quantified anywhere.

The unquantified remainder in a seawater concentrate is not invented — rubidium, strontium, vanadium, nickel and dozens of others genuinely are present in lake brine at trace and ultratrace concentrations. But "present" and "present at a nutritionally meaningful amount" are different statements, and only quantified figures let you check which one applies.

Current makes a "70+ trace minerals" claim of its own from ancient inland sea sources, and the same caveat applies to it. What differs is that Current quantifies eight of the trace minerals on its panel — zinc 1.5 mg, iodine 26 mcg, selenium 8 mcg, copper 130 mcg, manganese 0.3 mg, chromium 5 mcg, molybdenum 7 mcg, boron 0.3 mg — at deliberately modest, food-range amounts rather than megadoses, and contains no iron by design, because unnecessary supplemental iron is not something a daily product should push on everyone. The company also markets ConcenTrace as "America's #1 selling trace mineral supplement," citing SPINSscan data for the 52 weeks ending 7/12/2020. That was a real measurement. It is also six years old now, which is worth knowing when you read it on a 2026 bottle.

Taste, Dosing and Whether the Habit Survives

ConcenTrace is unflavored and unsweetened, and the manufacturer itself says it "has a very strong taste," recommending you mix it into juice or food to mask it. That is a rare and creditable piece of candour from a supplement company, and we are quoting it rather than editorialising over it. Buyers back it up: on iHerb the product carries 4.7 stars across 16,618 reviews, with the review text consistently describing an intensely bitter or saline flavour, and Walmart reviewers mentioning a metallic quality. Read both facts together. The taste is real, and a very large number of people tolerate it anyway.

The format difference is more practical than the taste one. ConcenTrace asks you to count or measure drops into something, ideally something with flavour, then remember where you are in the four-week ramp. Current asks you to tear a stick into 12–16 oz of water — stevia and monk fruit, zero sugar, no caffeine, in Lemon Lime, Watermelon or Wild Berry. Neither is difficult. But adherence is the quiet variable in every supplement decision, and single-serve sachets exist because measuring is the step people skip.

One dosing note applies to both. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for supplemental magnesium is 350 mg a day for adults, set by the Food and Nutrition Board on gastrointestinal effects rather than organ toxicity. ConcenTrace's label permits one to two servings, which at two is 500 mg. Current's ceiling of two sticks is 440 mg. A full serving of each puts you near 470 mg. Not alarming figures, but worth the arithmetic rather than the assumption, especially alongside a separate magnesium capsule.

Testing, Certification and What Each Brand Publishes

ConcenTrace is manufactured under cGMP and carries kosher, halal, certified vegan, gluten-free and non-GMO designations. Trace Minerals states that the product is "third-party tested for quality and purity."

That claim is unattributed. No named certifier — no NSF, no USP, no Informed Choice mark — appears anywhere on their site, and no certificate of analysis is published. The precise word is unattributed, not untested; plenty of reputable manufacturers run genuine third-party panels without publishing the paperwork. But an unnamed certifier is not verifiable by you, the buyer, and wanting that is reasonable.

Current is made in the USA in a GMP-certified facility and lab tested. The same scrutiny applies to us: a buyer is entitled to ask who did the testing and to see it. Holding a competitor to a disclosure bar we do not clear ourselves would be the cheapest move in this article, so consider it noted rather than dodged.

When Current Is the Better Buy

  • You want potassium in the same glass. 330 mg versus 3 mg. Nothing else on either panel moves this far.

  • You want it to taste like a drink. Flavored, zero sugar, no caffeine, stevia and monk fruit, one stick in 12–16 oz of water. Adherence is a formulation feature.
  • You want sodium and chloride in the mix. 500 mg and 1,060 mg respectively, which is a hydration-formula profile rather than a mineral-concentrate one.

The 50 mg VitAlign complex is the one piece with no counterpart on the ConcenTrace panel. It is a seven-food polyphenol blend, and it has been studied at 50 mg a day in three peer-reviewed human trials — Nemzer 2017 in Free Radical Research, Nemzer 2021 in the Journal of Food Research, and Fink 2025 in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. Those are ingredient studies at the dose Current uses, several of them manufacturer-affiliated, with modest sample sizes. They are not studies of Current, and we will not present them as such. Where ConcenTrace Still Makes Sense

Two cases, briefly, because they are real. If you are remineralizing reverse-osmosis or distilled water, the drops are arguably the best tool on the market for it: RO membranes strip minerals along with contaminants, and a few drops per pitcher put magnesium and chloride back without adding sweetener or flavour, which a powder stick cannot do for a water jug. And if you want a completely unflavoured, unsweetened concentrate — the other-ingredients line reads "Concentrated seawater," and that is the whole line — because you are adding minerals to soup, coffee or a smoothie where a lemon-lime flavour would be unwelcome, the drops are the correct format and Current is not.

Where the Evidence Is Weak

Several things in this comparison are less settled than either brand's marketing implies.

Trace mineral counts are not verifiable by consumers. Neither "70+" nor "over 72" can be checked against a printed panel, on either product. Both are source-derived claims about what seawater concentrate contains. Believe them at the level of chemistry, treat them cautiously at the level of nutrition.

Head-to-head absorption data for magnesium forms is thinner than the internet suggests. There are human studies comparing individual forms, and there is good mechanistic reasoning about chelates versus soluble inorganic salts, but a well-powered direct comparison of bisglycinate against magnesium chloride at these doses in ordinary adults is not something we can point you to. The osmotic mechanism is solid; the rank order of tolerance between specific salts at specific doses is less so.

Nobody has run a trial on either finished product. Not ConcenTrace, not Current. Everything either brand can honestly say rests on the nutrient science plus what is on the panel. Any comparison article claiming one product outperforms the other on a health outcome has invented the evidence.

Lithium and sulfate have no established Daily Value. Their nutritional significance at these amounts is not something the panel can tell you, and we are not going to speculate.

Myths Worth Retiring

"Liquid minerals absorb better than powders." Both products dissolve into water before you swallow them. Ionic magnesium chloride from a dropper and ionic magnesium from a dissolved powder stick arrive at the intestine in the same physical state. The delivery format is a convenience and taste decision, not an absorption one.

"More trace minerals is automatically better." Essentiality in humans is established for a specific and fairly short list. Presence in seawater is not evidence of nutritional need, and mineral antagonism is real — high-dose zinc interferes with copper absorption, for instance. Modest, food-range amounts are a deliberate choice, not a weak one.

"Low sodium means a cleaner product." Sodium is an essential electrolyte, not a contaminant. ConcenTrace's 5 mg reflects a manufacturing choice suited to a mineral concentrate. Current's 500 mg reflects a hydration-formula choice. Neither number is a purity score.

"America's #1 selling means it is the best formula." Sales rank measures sales. The specific claim also rests on SPINSscan data ending in July 2020, which was accurate then and is six years old now.

"You can just add drops to any electrolyte powder and call it a daily formula." You can combine them, and some people do. But total magnesium intake stacks, the upper intake level for supplemental magnesium is 350 mg a day, and two full servings will exceed it. Do the arithmetic first.
